THE WILDLIFE FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES
This is the outcome of a long lasting project developed by José Miguel in Amboseli - Kenya. What started as a stand alone photography project some years ago, it developed into a more extensive work. Focused on the African elephant, it encompassed some other species living in the same habitat. The unique Amboseli ecosystem makes it probably the best location in the world to photograph elephants providing a unique background scenery and encounters. Some of the most iconic wildlife images worldwide have been taken there. This series is the result of a very intensive work, where all the necessary efforts have been invested from the initial research, preparation, work in the field, to the final production of these images. The support of the local Maasai community and the experienced kenyan guides have been paramount to achieve these results. A more detailed narrative about this series and the full project can be found in the book “The Giants Whisper”, available through this website, where José Miguel tells the full story and brings the reader behind the scenes of an exciting photography adventure in the heart of Africa.

“charging”
Elephants are very protective with themselves, specially if there are baby ones in the group. It was a sunny morning in the dry lake bed in Amboseli, and a herd of these fantastic creatures were crossing looking for water and food. After getting in position and lying on the ground not far from them I put my attention on this big male. Apparently he did not like any human company at the time and started charging towards me shortly after I took my position. There was no option apart to be still, try to be calm and shoot. It was a very intense moment with certain physical risk, but the conditions for photography were absolutely unique. The sun light was harsh on the dry lake and the elephant, but far away there was a dark cloudy and dramatic sky, making a beautiful background canvas. Taken at 1/2000 sec the image fully captures the anger and energy of this enormous elephant in that moment. Luckily for me he stopped just a few meters in front and steered in a different direction… That day in the evening when I could review the image with some more attention, I was very emotional as I knew it was something really special. After so many days on the field and so much work behind, all the efforts were worth.

“the king”
He is Craig, the King of Amboseli. One of the few big tuskers left in the world, he is considered by many the biggest elephant alive. It was a privilege to be in front of him, sharing time and space with one of the most amazing creatures. It was really hard to photograph him. First because he is moving permanently, walking long distances in the Amboseli area. And it makes it difficult to find him. Without some of the most experiences guides in Africa and the support of the Massai this would not be possible. Secondly because finding him is one thing and making a strong and evocative picture of Craig is something different. Ideally an open space, might be with the Kilimanjaro behind as a background, or like in this case in open plain with an incredible textured sky over him. After several failing attempts I had a good feeling that morning and decided to try it again. We managed to find Craig outside the National Park and the light was getting better every moment. The picture was taken at a very short distance and from the ground, at very low level, and the time window for making it was very short. I was on the limit of proximity to him, with one eye on the viewfinder of any camera, and my ears fully attentive to the Massai just in case the situation turned really dangerous and I had to abort the shooting. There is always certain degree of anxiety and strong emotions being in front of Craig. He is a gentle giant, the King of Amboseli, but a free and wild soul. A living icon of the wildlife and nature. That morning in Amboseli and after so much work, it was finally possible to take this strong, beautiful and evocative photo of Craig.

“giant´s soul”
This is a composition made with three photographs of Craig, taken during one epic morning in the vast plains of Amboseli. It was a true privilege to share once again space and time with him. I had the opportunity to work very close and make a series of photographs of him. Even if individually they worked well, I decided to combine this time in a trilogy to create something different and even more dramatic. Craig is a giant and although a wild creature, he has a gentle soul and taking all the necessary precautions it was possible to work with him and create some unique images.

“planet earth”
The encounters with herd of elephants crossing the dry lake in Amboseli are no frequent any more. The Maasai use to cross with their cattle every day looking for water for their animals too. This has an influence in that area and interactions alter the elephants and other animals behavior. Moreover the severe draughts in Africa, and in particular in Amboseli have pushed the wildlife to move to different zones in search of food and water. The lack of rain and water in general influence the Amboseli ecosystem very much. After many hours working in the field and looking for a good photograph opportunity, and with the help of my guide, we finally had a beautiful encounter with this herd. For a few moments I had the chance to be very close in front of them. The light, the composition, the beautiful sky…everything made this very special.

“HOLD the line”
On that morning we spotted from a long distance a herd of elephants crossing the bed of the dry lake and we drove as fast as possible there. The light conditions were extraordinary and might be after so many days on safari I could get a good chance. During one hour I was working with my guide trying to get a good composition and the right direction of the light. Everything was very dynamic and fast, the time slots for shooting were extremely short. I had pre adjusted the settings of my three cameras and took the one with the focal length I need at every time. It was absolutely amazing moments. The chances to get such amazing harsh light on the elephants and such a dramatic cloudy sky as a background are minimal. Elephants tend to walk in straight rows, but on that occasion they were coming directly towards me in a frontal line. It was an absolutely gorgeous moment….Later on that day when I could revise the images I knew I had taken something really unique. This was only possible on my tenth day of safari. One of my favorite photos and memories in Amboseli.

I only can see here beauty and harmony. It was pure joy and warm for my soul to be there in Amboseli and see this scene. On this occasion I had the time to make this photograph with no rush. And after that, I put the camera down, stayed there for a while just looking enjoying the moment.

“TEMPERANCE”
In wildlife photography it is important to adapt and be flexible amongst other necessary skills. This is what happened that afternoon when traveling around Amboseli. I spotted a small group of buffalos not far from where we were, and I asked Raymond to drive there and try to get as close as possible without harming them. The place was absolutely fantastic and the light too. The cloudy sky offered an incredible background, and to my surprise the buffalos let us to get really close. It is well known the no tolerance these animals have with humans, but on that afternoon it seemed differently. After quite some time being there to let them become familiar with my presence I make this beautiful image taken at low level and really close. The serenity and peace of the moment gives the atmosphere and mood.

“CRAIG”
If there is an iconic creature that transcends Amboseli is Craig. Craig is one of the few big tuskers alive on earth and a desired subject worldwide for many photographers. He was always in my mind when I travelled to Amboseli the very first time, and I was lucky to find and photograph him then. Despite it was one of the most exciting experiences in my life so far, the conditions prevented me to make a good and strong photo of Craig during my first safari. It was only after several tries and on later trips to Kenia when I had the chance to meet him again under more favorable conditions for photography. The support from my guide and the Maasai was paramount, and I was able to stay in directly in front of him the necessary time to make some photographs I really wanted to. I got as close as possible to Craig having the Maasai with me, and vey attentive to them, as my safety was in their hands. I strongly recommend and advice everyone not to do that on his/her own, as it is really dangerous. Despite that Craig is familiar with humans, he is a wild giant. In any case and apart of the photography, the experience to share space and time with him is something ineffable. In this picture I wanted to have a close look to him, capturing one unique moment when both were looking into the eyes of the other, in complete silence. I felt he has a good soul and heart, and some days later I had another chance to experience it, but that’s another story I tell in my book “The Giants Whisper”, where I choose this image for the cover.

“THE CROSS”
One of the most epic action for photography I have ever seen and photographed is the cross of the dry lake in Amboseli by a herd of elephants. It is certainly not very frequent any more due to a number of factors. And it is even more rare to see a large one. The place is certainly magic, and eventually you can feel the fresh air and the sun on your face while other wild animals are not far away. Once the herd starts crossing it is important to take rapid decisions for making the photograph. The light direction, the background, the chances to get close to them without altering their behavior… It is important to decide fast on the desired composition and move quickly. On that particular morning Raymond and I spotted this herd from the distance and having appreciated the beautiful texture of the sky, the number of the elephants and the changing sun light projection over the ground due to the moving clouds I decided to make a contextual photo to illustrate and convey the feeling of the large open space, of peace and freedom, and the slow walk of the elephants over this unique plain. I had the time to frame and choose the composition, and then I waited till the clouds blocked the light over the ground just in front the the elephants, to get this natural contrast and beauty. I could shoot with high shutter speed and the lowest ISO, making it pin sharp and encompassing a very wide dynamic range, capturing all the small details and the rich different tonal ranges. This is one of my favorite photographs of that expedition.

“REFLEXES”
This is one image of a short series about buffalos in Amboseli. On that particular afternoon the luck was on my side and I could work for about two hours in a short distance with a group of buffalos. I was certainly surprised they accepted me in their proximity as it is well known that buffalos do not like human nearby. But they seemed to be quite relaxed that day. These amazing animals are really strong and it is a pleasure to observe them free. They tend to be in larger groups, but in this particular occasion there were only four. One of them out of the frame, just to balance the composition. The beautiful reflexes over the water, the cloudy and textured sky were simply amazing and the perfect backdrop for this image. While looking through the view finder the three birds just flew over the buffalos and I could capture that precise moment making this picture really special. The feelings I had there were calm and peace. Quiet moments in Amboseli.

“the path”
My preference is to photograph wild animals as close as possible. Being a portrait photographer as well, I believe that proximity is the best way to make an immersive photograph and capture the soul of your subject. But in the nature, with wild and enormous animals like elephants it’s not an easy task. With the help of my guide and the Maasai sometimes it is possible to create such opportunities to get close to them. On that sunny morning in Amboseli land I had one of those not frequent windows. After positioning myself where we thought the elephants would pass by, I waited for them. No doubt the estimation made by Juma was very accurate. There is a point of no return when the elephants are coming towards you after which you should not move at all or change position because this might trigger a dangerous situation and the animals might attack you if they feel threatened by your presence. At those moment when these giants are just in front of you so close, there is an intense mix of emotions and feelings….but you have to make the shoot and try to focus on it. There was anxiety inside me, and the adrenaline was flowing intensively through my veins. I took this photograph while handholding the camera and standing out of the car, just at a very short distance, but after seeing the image later in the day for the first time I felt really happy and fulfilled. It is a very special one, plenty of energy, strength and soul.

“TIMELESS”
Once you see these animals free, in their habitat, you can not see them again differently. There is a strange feeling of a natural connection with them, with the wildness, that we can not perceive living in crowded cities. This is where we all belong: to nature. My trips to Africa helped me to realize that. When I was that morning in the dry lake observing a herd of elephants crossing the dusty plain under the harsh sunlight, hearing their breath and their feet feet smashing the ground,…I felt that connection. And I made this photograph, minimalism, but capturing the essence and mood of the moment.

“FROM the past”
That was an exceptional morning in Amboseli. Might be one of a hundred, because all the ingredients for making a beautiful strong photograph were coming together, by surprise, but after so much work. I had already been scouting the area with Juma for some hours with no results when he took his binoculars and look very concentrated to the far end of the dry lake. He told me there was a herd of elephants about to cross it, so we immediately drove there as fast as we could. I was preparing my three cameras on the way, sitting in the back of the car, which was bumping really much. This and the wind with the dust were making the task not easy. In any case we managed to arrive there with time enough to position ourselves in a good angle with the light and this majestic elephant leading the group. I jumped out of the car and when the elephant was close, I made the shoot. I love the full composition, the lights and shadows in this image, the majestic pose and the drama. It looks something from another time…

“lonely”
There are moments in Amboseli when everything seems to stop. Even the time. And one have the doubt wether or not make the photograph or just simply take your eyes apart from the camera and enjoy what it is in front. As a photographer I most of the times make the photo first. Because things happen only once and can not be repeated. But after, I like to enjoy the moment just being there. That morning in Amboseli there was one of these occasions and when this lonely elephant was crossing the dry lake alone I had to stop shooting and simply enjoy being there. The dusty plain, the beautiful sky and the light were all accompanying this marvelous creature, making a unique scene. I believe this image captures very well those feelings and a part of the Amboseli spirit. The context makes a difference here.

“sunset”
I made no compromises with photography in Amboseli and I worked very hard to create the best photographic opportunities possible. It involves to wake up very early in the morning before sunrise and work till really late, trying to benefit from the best light conditions. I try to meet the best light with the help of my guide, in this occasion Juma. That evening we decided to stay in the dry lake after observing the clouds in the sky and the holes where the sub beams were going through. I knew that the light could be fantastic if I was patient enough and tried. And when the time came, this group of four giraffes were crossing the plain. A silhouette photograph with the incredible sun beams in the background was my choice and for a few seconds I could be in the position to shoot. It was the golden end of a very hard day with not much success, but perseverance was the key to get the shot. Just at the end of the day, when all the other left I kept working with Juma. I was just on the time limit to stay there without breaking the national park regulations, and we had to steer immediately to our lodge after this. But with a real good feeling of accomplishment.

“WANDERING”
Quite often the most beautiful light is juts at sunrise and sunset, the well known “golden hour”. But the time window in Amboseli for this light is very short due to its latitude close to the Ecuador. The sun move really fast then. This is why capturing a beautiful and strong picture with such light is quite challenging. To achieve that it is necessary a big dosis of perseverance and hard work… and a little bit of luck. I always wake up very early in Amboseli when it is still dark, and return to the lodge as late as possible. Just to meet the great light and increase the number of good photograph conditions. On one of this occasions and with the help of my guide Juma, we could find this couple of male elephants going in the direction of the bushes. But before they got lost into them I could get really close and make this photograph, with plenty of mood and atmosphere. For safety reasons I kept th distance and during a few seconds I had the attention of the elephant leading the two, who looked directly to me. It is at these moments when I have to react fast and make the photo before the elephants change direction or become more dangerous. In any case I had the feeling that these magnificent animals are of a peaceful nature and in most of the situations do not attack if they don’t feel threatened. Important is to count with the experience and assessment of a very good guide, which will judge the conditions and tell you what is posible and what it is not.

“the guardians”
It is very rare to see a scene like this. And it is even more rare to be able to photograph. I was surprised how calm these buffalos were with my presence just a few meters in front. The day was absolutely beautiful, the sky had plenty of texture sue to the clouds, and the light was fantastic. This was a truly reward to all the efforts made before. While I have to spend many hours in Amboseli scouting the plain, looking for the wild animals, accepting one failure after another…, it is important to keep working on that and do not give up. The three buffalos were completely still, being the one in the centre looking somewhere else while the two “guardians” focused on me, give a sense of peace and calm. The beautiful background, the mood, …. Everything worked well, giving the image a pictorial touch.

“the ROW”
After trying for several days with no success, on that morning the wind was blowing on my sails…., and while Raymond and I were helping another vehicle stuck in the mud, we spotted a large herd of elephants starting to cross the bed of the dry lake. After guessing where they would pass by (elephants tend to walk in straight lines), we fixed our position and I got ready with the camera on the ground to make a low level picture of the group. These were very intense moments as they passed by very, very close to my position, and although there was some risk, this was one of the most beautiful moments on the safari.

“WILD soul”
I could finally and after many attempts to be with Craig, juts face to face, in open space. There were very intense moments together, and although there is always a degree of anxiety being in front of such unique wild creature, I have to recognize and emphasize the beauty of the moment. He seemed to accept my presence and let me take this image, which is one of my favorites of him. Craig is one of the few big tuskers still alive (might be not more that twenty in the world) and considered by many the biggest elephant in the planet. Apart from that, which really impressed me is the kind of connection I could establish with him. His attitude and pose, the general composition of the picture, the beautiful texture in the sky… an the light, were all on my side that morning in Amboseli. But the moment will remain always in my memory.

“the circle”
It was early morning in Amboseli when I was already scouting the area with Raymond, my guide. We spotted this group of elephants not far away, but the walked in the opposite direction to where we were. Suddenly something extraordinary happened and they started running to us. They were really scared for some reason, most probably due to the presence of a predator in the proximity. And in the middle of their run away they stopped just in front of me for a few seconds. Despite the short time, I had my camera ready and could take this photograph, which is one of my favorites of that expedition to Kenya. The composition and mainly the direct eyes contact between this family of elephants and me, makes it a very soulful and special image. Note the little baby elephant in the group, pointing at me with its trunk…

“SERENITY”
Working with one of the best guides makes a difference and I am lucky and thankful to Juma for helping me to make some unique photographs in Amboseli. After several expeditions together we have a very good understanding of each other and he knows how I work and my photography style. This image I made with him is a perfect example. We worked with a group of elephants in open space and waited for the good light. Then we went around to get the best compositions possible with the coming light from behind. It was a well earned reward and I believe it is important to understand that a good photograph is made only after some time working on it, well before the shutter release. We were preparing ourselves several hours on the filed to get the shot. The atmosphere and the sense of freedom and peace this image conveys is a plus. I found a beautiful composition and the incredible moments in company of this fantastic creatures was priceless. This is one of the few occasions I used a black mist filter on camera when making the photograph to give a more cinematograph effect.

Giraffes are a difficult subject to photograph in Amboseli. It is nearly impossible to get close to them as they seem to avoid any proximity with humans in this environment. They run fast away. But on that evening I decided to try anyhow. There was a small group of them crossing the dry lake in Amboseli and I asked my guide Juma to position ourselves with the sun behind us and not get too close to the giraffes. I was ready to jump out of the car and anticipated the shot, lying on the ground, adjusting beforehand the settings of the camera and when the group started running I had no more that five seconds to get the shot. This image was really hard to get, but it was worth the effort. An amount of observation of the animals behavior in preparation of the shoot is needed. The giraffes running in this wide open space under such a beautiful sky makes an evocative image and conveys a unique feeling of freedom and wildness.

“all for one”
Elephants are very protective with themselves, specially if there are baby ones in the group. It was a sunny morning in the dry lake bed in Amboseli, and a herd of these fantastic creatures were crossing looking for water and food, I was choosing a place together with my guide where we though the group would pass by and luckily they stopped together just in front. And for a few moments we looked at each other and I could make this photo before they continue their way. It is always a very emotional moment to share space and time with these fantastic creatures. The absence of poaching in Amboseli for number of years already makes it possible at times to get close to them, with some precautions of course. Elephants don’t like to be surprised and you can be somehow safe keeping a distance and letting them to come to you and no viceversa. Sometimes they are just curious and come very close. Really close, believe me. There are exciting moments with some anxiety at times, but full of beauty.

“the crossing”
The day was not going really successful. I had been working with Raymond since very early in the morning with almost no animal in our way. Sunset was coming soon little by little. I noticed Raymond was not very happy about that. Me neither, but there are days like that one, when it doesn’t matter how many efforts and how hard you try, and you get nothing. And it is important to understand and to accept it, and still keep moving on. And that’s why I like to work so much with Raymond. We are a team and we do not give up. So, after a small chat we decided to go to a different corner in the Amboseli national park, quite far from the most crowded areas. We might find something… and I tried my luck. And it was the right decision because Raymond spotted a group of elephants having a mud bad in a water hole. And we went there. It was simply fantastic. We could get relatively close to the herd and observe the scene. But it was not till they finished their bad and decided to go somewhere else that they conformed this group and under the last evening sunlight started to move. I loved the composition and the atmosphere. And photography for me is about this as well… to capture those beautiful daily moments in the life of these magnificent creatures, capturing the mood of that unique view under the sun and the cloudy sky of Amboseli.

“wild and FREE”
This was really a difficult photograph to make. The light was really beautiful, the background,… and the giraffes group. But they were running fast and even faster as I wanted to get closer. There was no other way that to drive parallel to them with the car, fast, trying to anticipate their position and then jump out of the vehicle with the camera settings ready. There was only a couple of seconds to frame and shoot. After several attempts I finally got the shot I wanted and that I believe reflects the intensity of the moment. This beautiful line of giraffes running free along the plain in Amboseli is all about. It is just beauty, it is real, it is freedom and wildness.

“facING”
Elephants don’t like to be surprised. So, that morning after finding Craig in the bushes I stayed there for some time letting him to get familiar with my presence before getting out of the car, lying on the ground and make the photograph. It is thanks to my guide and the Maasai, who advise me when it is possible to get close to him. This was not our first encounter and I believe he remembered me, or at least this is how I felt. Then, probably because his curiosity, he walked towards me and stopped just in front, face to face, looking directly into my eyes. It was a very emotional moment, in absolute silence, and I observed the scene through the viewfinder of my camera. And I shouted. It is an absolute privilege to stay there, juts in front, in the company of this magnificent creature. Probably the biggest elephant in the world and one of the few left in his class. Somehow with a calm character and clean soul. A giant in all senses. No doubt this was one of the most emotional and unique experiences I ever had. Difficult to explain with words, but I am proud of this photo, which I believe reflects how Craig is, his essence.

“broken”
It was already late and there were not many chances to make a good photograph on that day. I had worked hard with my guide Juma for many hours with not much success. Completely covered by the dust of Amboseli, exhausted and in need of some rest, we steered to the lodge. But on the way Juma spotted these 2 male elephants walking to the bushes, probably to get some food and water. We estimated their way and positioned ourselves close where we though they would cross. Once more the skills and experience of my guide were paramount and I could make this photograph of these two magnificent mammals really close. The one in front had one broken tusk, probably the result of a fight with another male. He looked exhausted too, and I could make this image just before we lost them. It was a fantastic end of the day.

“around”
Elephants are very protective with themselves, specially if there are baby ones in the group. It was very close to the sunset and we had spend sometime with a group of elephants and waiting for the best light to come. I had a time window not very long, but enough to work with then and capture unique scenes like this one where the baby elephant is surrounded by other two. This photograph captures the strong family sense of the elephants and it is one of those special moments that I keep in my memories.

“broken sky”
Amboseli is a unique place. The first time I travelled there and saw it I had the impression it was nothing special, a place with lots of dust, not much vegetation and not so much animals action. I was completely wrong. But it’s necessary to spend enough time on the field, get supported by experience guide, be patience, have perseverance and work really much. That evening there was not much time left to get dark and the time to drive back to the lodge was getting closer. After many hours driving, completely exhausted, dirty covered by dust, and trying to find the elephants with no success…., my guide Juma spotted a small group of them crossing a dusty plain in the direction of the bushes. There was not much time and light, but plenty of wind and dust in the air. But moreover the sun was getting low really fast and its sunbeams crossing a cloudy broken sky. The drama was there…. and quickly decided to make a silhouette photo of the herd. The broken sky provided a unique canvas, the dust in the air made the sunbeams more relevant in the scene, and the elephants under the last sun light of the day made my day. A soulful photograph with plenty of atmosphere. It was worth to work so hard to get it.

“don´t get closer”
Keeping this time some distance from the herd to give some contextual view of the crossing through the dry lake in Amboseli, the big male custodian of the group gave me a clear signal for not getting closer. Elephants are very protective, specially when there are any baby line in the herd. It is really emotional to see this behavior and witness the strong family sense of these magnificent animals. And it is hard to know that there are less and less spaces for them where they can be free. There is no doubt that we have a common obligation to protect and raise awareness about wildlife.

“FURY”
There was a lot of work patience, perseverance and previous failures before I could take this photograph. Elephants sand baths are really worth to see. I truly believe this photo captures the energy of the moment and freeze an instant in time where the human eye can not stop and appreciate by itself such wild beauty. It’s pure energy, pure freedom, pure wildness… Thanks to my guide Raymond for his patience and help to get the shot.

“RHYTHM OF LIFE”
Giraffes cross the bed of the dry lake in the direction of the few water holes available where to quench their thirst. The advantage is that when they cross this place, they can be spotted from a long distance due their unique silhouettes. But one of the challenges to photograph them here is that it is difficult to get close. They tend to run away very fast. In this occasion the light was absolutely fantastic and with the sun behind me I could use a high shutter speed to freeze the movement and keep it very sharp. The luck was on my side and I took this photo where the three giraffes are perfectly aligned for a moment in their run, and tat makes this photo unique. They are another extraordinary habitant of the dusty plains in Amboseli, and it was beautiful and worth to work photographing them.

“STANDING”
After reaching a remote corner of the conservancy I could get very close to this lonely male elephant. He was calm and seemed not to worry about my presence. The day was coming soon to an end but it was on those moments when I had the best light and this extraordinary photograph opportunity. The day had not been very successful till that moment, but this could change anytime. And it happened. In complete silence I could stay lying on the ground for a while observing the sunset and this majestic creature. Just there, in the wild, in complete silence, enjoying the moment….I frame a close composition and made the photograph. And after being there for a little bit more time, Juma and I returned to the lodge. It was getting dark soon, and it was time to rest and get ready for another unique day tomorrow.

“courage”
A close photograph of my buffalo series in Amboseli. This was not planned or foreseen, but while scoring the vast plain of Amboseli with my guide Raymond, the opportunity arose and we could surprisingly get close to this male buffalo. It was needed sometime in his proximity to let this buffalo to become familiar with our presence. He was focused on me and getting closer would have been very risky and we didn’t want to compromise our safety so much, specially me. I was with my upper body hanging out of the car to get a low level perspective, and using the silent mode of my camera to not disturb this wild animal. After several attempts I could made this photograph , which believe is quite strong and conveys a mixed mood. I could feel the enormous courage of this amazing creature, but I can not explain it with words. Might be this is why I prefer my camera.
